About CIMPA

History, CIMPA and PLM

In the early nineties new IT technologies appeared and were developed for major industrial sectors: automobile, aeronautics, space.

These technologies are directly related to the needs of an economic context:
  • Reduce design and production lead times, thus costs
  • Anticipate and integrate the needs of the different trades and participants
  • Anticipate and manage the various product scenarios and modifications
  • Apply quality standards and assure traceability
  • Anticipate and take into account the needs of the product in service

This is the essence of PLM, Product Lifecycle Management.

These 5 points contain what in “business jargon” is called Concurrent Engineering, Configuration Management, Digital Mock-up, Data Management and Exchange, Extended Enterprise, In Service, and many other more difficult terms.
The need was there, so were the technologies.

But how can these essential technologies be integrated in a company whose know-how is the product and not IT?

That’s what Aérospatiale and the Joint Research Center of EADS understood and anticipated when they founded CIMPA in 1995: Recommend, integrate and maintain these new IT technologies in EADS and Aérospatiale that became the Airbus group.

Specialising in computer-aided manufacturing and industrial applications, CIMPA pursued its development on the German market in 2001 with a subsidiary in Hamburg and an English subsidiary in Filton in 2005.

In 2003, CIMPA became a subsidiary of Airbus S.A.S. and expanded its presence in several European countries with a worldwide intervention scope. Its aim was to integrate Product Lifecycle Management in all aspects of the processes related to the product from its design to its maintenance and support, including its conception and manufacture in an extended PLM context: the Extended Enterprise and customer services.
